A rare early end of season came to the Bearcats with a 5-3 loss to Gate
City in the Clinch Mountain District Tournament. Gate City took the lead
with a solo homerun in the second inning and scored two more unearned
runs that same inning for a 3-0 lead. VHS struggled at the plate but
looked as though they might fight back with a couple of their own runs
in the fifth courtesy of an error by the Gate City defense. The Bearcats
went down with three straight outs in the sixth and allowed the Blue
Devils to stretch their lead with a pair of runs in the seventh, one
unearned. VHS scratched out another run in the bottom of the inning but
were unable to muster a serious challenge. Virginia High finished the
season with an uncharacteristic 9-12 season and exited the playoffs
early with the loss in the district tournament.
