5/4/10
Virginia High exploded for six runs in the top of the seventh inning to
claim an 11-6 win over Clinch Mountain District rival Gate City. The
Bearcats are now 4-0 in district play and sit on top of the Clinch
Mountain District. Gate City took an early two run lead in the first
with the help of two hit batters. VHS put four runs on the board in the
third with three hits to give the Bearcats a short lived 4-2 lead. The
Blue Devils answered back with two in the bottom half to tie the score.
Another run in the top of the fourth once again gave Virginia High a
brief lead but hit batters and mis-played balls let Gate City tie the
game again. Then in the seventh, VHS loaded the bases with a pair of
base hits and an intentional walk. Another base on balls followed by a
sacrifice fly, a hit batter, a two run sacrifice bunt and an RBI single
put the Bearcats in command. Seth Davis was three for four at the plate
with two RBI's to help lead the Bearcats. Dylan Sullins had a two for
three night with three RBI's. Sullins pitched five innings but left the
mound with no decision and Tyler Arnett got the win in relief pitching
the final two frames.
