Virginia High defeated JJ Kelly 12-3 in the opening round game of the
Region D tournament. The Bearcats took an early 3-0 lead in the first
inning with RBI singles by Seth Davis and Dylan Sullins and an RBI
double by Jarred Tate. VHS gave up three runs in the third to allow JJ
Kelly to tie the score. In the fifth, Virginia High took advantage of
bases on balls, four JJ Kelly errors and a booming two RBI triple to
score seven runs off three hits and the Bearcats never looked back.
Another pair of runs in the sixth put the Bearcats up 12-3. Tate earned
the win on the mound with twelve strikeouts and gave up four base hits
in his five and a third innings of work. Sullins finished up with a two
for two night at the plate with three RBI's. Seth Davis also had a pair
of hits. Virginia High will advance to the semi-finals of the Region D
tournament and will face undefeated Honaker at Coeburn on Thursday
night.
