6/8/10
Virginia High survived a scare and fought off a determined Fort Chiswell
team to take an 11-10 win in eight innings of the VHSL state
quarter-finals. The Bearcats jumped out with a 5-0 lead after two
innings and Fort Chiswell fought back for three of their own in the top
of the third with three hits and a Bearcat error. VHS posted another run
in their half but gave up three more in the fourth with a pair of
errors, a triple and wild pitches. With the scored knotted up the
Bearcats put up two more runs in the bottom of the fourth and one in the
bottom of the fifth to take a 9-6 lead into the sixth. Fort Chiswell
scored three runs in the sixth to once again tie the score at 9-9. Fort
Chiswell scored in the eighth and put the Bearcats into a do or die
situation. Dakota Katelouzos began the bottom of the eighth with a base
hit and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Anthony McCoy. Katelouzos
scored on a base hit by Seth Davis to give the VHS team new life. Pinch
runner Ryne Loggins stole second and scored the game winning run off a
single by Dylan Sullins. Davis finished up the night with three hits and
Clint Chafin also had three hits. Katelouzos, McCoy and Sullins each had
two hits. Sullins started for the Bearcats on the mound and was relieved
by Tyler Arnett in the sixth.
