Virginia High falls to Rappahannock in state finals

6/13/10 Virginia High came up short in their bid for the VHSL State Championship witha 7-4 loss to Rappahannock. VHS hoped for one of their trademark comebacks after a suspended game forced them to continue their quest on Sunday morning. VHS trailed 4-3 with two outs and a Rappahannock runner on third when the umpires suspended play due to lightning in the area. Rains followed and the decision was made to complete the game on Sunday morning. The Bearcats were unable to keep the score where it was and gave up an additional three runs when play resumed. Rappahannock scored a run in the third inning with a walk, a base hit and a pair of passed balls. VHS tied the score in the fourth with a base on balls and an RBI double by Dylan Sullins. They took the lead in the fifth with a pair of runs off base hits by Max Morris and Anthony McCoy. McCoy's hit got by the right fielder and then Josh Arnold followed up with an RBI double to give the Bearcats a 3-1 lead. In the sixth, a dropped third strike, base hit and a hit batter opened the door for Rappahannock and a Bearcat error allowed the Bearcat lead to disappear and the seventh began with the score knotted up at 3-3. In the seventh another Bearcat error allowed the go ahead run to reach base and later scored from a base hit. The game was suspended soon after and the Bearcats were forced to wait to try and recover.
